FDA issues safety warning about Zantac (ranitidine)

On April 1, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about all over-the-counter and prescription drugs which contain ranitidine, an active ingredient in the drug Zantac. The FDA urged all manufacturers of drugs containing ranitidine to pull these drugs from store shelves due to an on-going investigation into serious health problems caused by ranitidine.

The FDA’s on-going investigation focuses on increased levels of a contaminant in the drug which, over time, pose a risk to public health. Specifically, scientists are investigating a possible link between ranitidine use and cancer.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) contamination in Zantac (ranitidine)

Recent medical studies by the FDA and other health officials have focused on a substance in Zantac which can cause cancer. In September 2019, the FDA issued an advisory after studies found that people who used Zantac over time had increased levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a potentially dangerous industrial chemical known to cause cancer.

In response, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart announced in September 2019 that they would no longer sell Zantac and other over-the-counter drugs containing ranitidine, due to the FDA studies which discovered the harmful carcinogen NDMA in these medications. One month later, Sanofi voluntarily recalled Zantac in the United States and Canada “due to inconsistencies in preliminary test results,” according to an announcement issued by Sanofi on Oct. 18, 2019.

What are common symptoms of Zantac health problems?

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in stools
  • Dark urine
