What happened?
At approximately 4:20 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020, a massive explosion occurred at the Watson Grinding & Manufacturing Co. near the corner of Gessner and Clay roads in northwest Houston, killing at least two people and injuring others.
The blast was powerful enough that it rattled nearby homes off their foundations, collapsed roofs and walls, shattered windows, blew in garage doors, and knocked residents out of their beds. The devastation and destruction were so bad that one man described the aftermath in his neighborhood as a “warzone.” Debris from the blast were also found at least a quarter mile away from the site of the explosion.
According to reports, the owner of the facility said the explosion originated from a tank filled with propylene, a pungent flammable gas that’s used to make many products and is similar to propane.
